Heading to The Sundance Film Festival

We’re pleased to share a guest post from Josh Dorfman, a green entrepreneur, media personality, author of The Lazy Environmentalist and FilterForGood spokesperson. Learn more about Josh by checking out Tips from Josh or his blog, The Lazy Environmentalist.**

Back in September I participated in the 5-day, 300-mile Brita Climate Ride** from New York City to Washington DC. It was an amazing bicycling adventure and a very cool way to raise awareness about climate change issues. Brita sent a team to provide filtered water at every rest stop along the route so the riders could stay healthy and hydrated. While that bike ride pushed me to my limits, I was never quite certain who was working harder, me or the women on the Brita hydration team. They were up at dawn each morning and out of camp and en route long before the cyclists. It was, to say the least, impressive.

Now Brita is taking on the Sundance Film Festival by providing filtered water to the thousands of industry insiders, fans and media members who will be on hand for the 10-day event starting today (January 15). In so doing, the Sundance Institute estimates that Brita’s efforts will eliminate the need for 50,000 single-use disposable water bottles. It’s a major win for the planet and for the Sundance Institute because that also translates into thousands of dollars in savings. While filmmakers will be working hard to promote and sell their films and some film industry executives will pull all-night negotiations to buy film rights, I have a hunch that some of the hardest working people in Park City during the festival will be the Brita hydration team. It’s a commitment to a brand, a product, and a solution that they feel passionate about and want to share with as many people as possible.

My new television show, The Lazy Environmentalist, will air this June on Sundance Channel. So I too will be at the festival to help promote the show and film several short segments which will also air on Sundance Channel this spring. I’ll interview the directors of environmentally themed films and explore the numerous ways in which this year’s festival is promoting a green agenda and walking its own talk by greening its operations. We’ll also do some man-on-the-street interviews to gauge the interest and commitment of festival goers to the green cause. And we’ll certainly find time to hit the ski slopes which will preferably be entirely white and covered in deep powder. After I graduated from college, I spent one of the best years of my life as a ski bum in Vail, Colorado. I’m looking forward to rekindling some of those memories and going for “big air” though I’m not sure how my producer would feel about that. We start filming my television show immediately following the festival. I think he’d prefer I play it safe, but when the mountains call, you just never know what might happen.
