Have a Food Fight by voting with your fork

The Eat Local Challenge** is officially over for 2008, but the effort to revamp our food system — in both big and small ways — is getting more attention than ever. Last week, even Barack Obama brought up the problems with our oil-dependent, polluting and unhealthy food system in the US in an interview with Time magazine’s Joe Klein** (via Treehugger**).
Apparently, Obama read the NY Times article penned by Michael Pollan**, author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma, which I talked about a few weeks ago**. In it, Pollan calls for sun-food, or food grown by the sun, not not by fossil fuels, chemicals and pesticides — and this call has become a growing rallying cry of sorts for an increasing number of environmentalists, nutritionist, health foodies, farmers and many others.
The work of this growing group of activists is showcased in “Food from your backyard**,” a segment put together by NBC’s Dawna Friesen which looks at efforts to grow food in urban areas, due to health, environmental and financial reasons (via groovygreen.com**).
The short clip** takes you all over the world — from backyard and balcony farmers in London to the local urban farms in Cuba, to city farms in Chicago and New York City.
If that segment’s whet your appetite for more details about sun-food, you’ll be happy to know about a couple new foodie films! Food Fight**, a new documentary film that takes a “look at how American agricultural policy and food culture developed in the 20th century and how the California food movement rebelled against big agribusiness to launch the local organic food movement.”
Watch the trailer**! Pollan himself’s featured in the film, along with Wolfgang Puck, Alice Waters of Chez Panisse and other famous eco-foodies. Sign up** to find out about when a screening will be coming to a theater near you.
