Natural Remedies for the Common Cold
Posted by: Sarah on February 25th, 2010

If moving to a new home last week wasn’t enough excitement for our family, it seems we’ve all come down with the cold/cough hybrid of death this week. It seems we aren’t the only ones, though. Everywhere I turn, friends and acquaintances are complaining of respiratory bugs that are bringing them down.
Ahhh, February. Cold and flu season is in full effect and it’s just swell, isn’t it? Of course, I personally don’t just have a cold. I have a cold AND a baby growing in my belly, which makes most medication off limits. Not being a big fan of cold medication anyway, here are some tips I use to help soothe myself during my run-ins with nasty cold bugs.
1. NeilMed Sinus Rinse** – You all, I can NOT stress how wonderful this product is. Simply put, it provides all the benefits of a neti pot without the challenges. I used a neti pot for years, but when I switched to the NeilMed sinus rinses, I threw my neti pot away for good. I find the nasal irrigation to be much easier to use and much easier to clean up.
2. Hot tea – Nothing soothes a scratchy throat better than hot tea with honey. Decaf Earl Grey and I have become tight friends, and I always feel much less congested while sipping my tea.
3. Steamy showers – Steamy showers aren’t just for toddlers with croup! Spending a few minutes in a steamy bathroom can do wonders for loosening chest congestion and improving overall respiration.
4. Rest, rest and more rest – I know we are all busy, but the more you can keep yourself from expending too much energy, the quicker your body can heal itself.
5. Water – Fill your Brita pitcher to the brim and drink up, folks! Water is crucial in fueling your body to overcome sickness.
What are your natural remedies for cold relief? I would love to add a couple to my repertoire.
Now, go and get well! That’s an order!

I actually have a cold right now, so this post’s very timely for me! I’ve tried all your tips so far except the NeilMed Sunus Rinse — but before I get it, I have a question: If my nose is all stuffed up, can I still use this?
