My no-disposable-plastic wine-and-cocktails party

I threw a little cocktail party for a few friends last Sunday — a disposable water bottle-free party, of course. I’m not sure, in fact, why people even buy disposable water bottles for parties because at all the parties I’ve thrown, I’ve noticed that people tend not to drink that much water when there’s beer, wine, vodka and juice around! Four tips for a disposable plastic-free party:

1. Have filtered water around. I did fill up a FilterForGood Nalgene with filtered water to have it on hand for the party, but it never ended up even getting used. I guess the Brita filtered fast enough for everyone.

2. Amass the reusable glasses. Of course I don’t buy plastic cups — I had enough glasses for everyone at the small get together, and had I not, would just have asked some of the friends to bring extra glasses.

3. Find eco-friendly drinks. Sadly, the organic wine selection at Trader Joe’s seems to have gotten pitifully tiny! I did get organic mixers though — and found a bottle of eco-friendly 360 Vodka.

4. Offer organic snacks. My guests seem to have been not just organic friendly but oddly health conscious. All the organic strawberries, blueberries, and grapes disappeared at the party — but I had a lot of organic corn tortilla chips and chocolate chip cookies left over….

5. One day, wash the dishes. The most problematic part about the mostly disposable plastic-free party’s that I’ve yet to actually wash the reusable dishes and glasses….

One last issue: I’m never quite sure what to do with the leftovers. Reopening the tub of cookies seems like just asking for trouble…. This may be a great time to finally get that city-subsidized composter I’ve been talking about** –
