How to REALLY be a lazy environmentalist
Posted by: Siel on September 26th, 2008
Think environmentalism’s all hard work and sacrifice? Not according to my greenie friends. Not too long ago, my friend Traci and I got to talking about Josh Dorfman, aka The Lazy Environmentalist** and spokesperson for FilterForGood. Our conclusion: He’s just not lazy enough.
Seriously, the guy’s traveling around planting trees and clearing fields** (right)! We here in L.A. pride ourselves on being lazier than that. Lemme name some ways how you can REALLY be a lazy environmentalist:
>> Get rid of your alarm clock. Wake up au naturale when you feel like it — and save the energy it would’ve taken to set your morning alarm go off.
>> Come to think of it, don’t buy a watch, period. Save resources; make the world move on your time.
>> Join an organic wine club that delivers bottles to your door — but only if the club lets you auto-renew, so you can enjoy your drinks without bothering to sign up again every year.
>> Host the local Green Drinks** in your home. And by host, I mean just let people come over — bearing organic booze. Why biodiesel over to a party when you can make the party come to you?
Because really, reducing and reusing isn’t just about saving resources — it’s about embracing your inner sloth. Why make an extra trip to the store when you can make do with what’s already around? I’d much rather just reuse tin cans as a container garden** than transport new pots in my bike basket –
So join me in my lazy enviro-gardening adventures. No, it’s not too late to plant a garden now! Read Slate’s article on the advantages of planting a garden in the fall**. And meet me back here next week for more laid-back gardening ideas.
