Take the February Food Waste Reduction Challenge
Posted by: Siel on February 6th, 2009

Being part of the blogosphere’s really challenging! Back in October was the Eat Local Challenge,** then in December was the No Plastic Holiday Challenge.** And now, for Feb. 2009, is the Food Waste Reduction Challenge** (via crunchy domestic goddess**).
Hatched by the Crunchy Chicken,** the Food Waste Reduction Challenge is an eco-friendly initiative that’ll also save people money during this economic downturn. Considering the fact that 40 – 50% of the edible food in the U.S. never gets eaten, eliminating food waste would create a lot of savings indeed.
Challenge takers’ll really be doing good for the environment too. Beyond the resources used to grow and transport the food to get it into your house, food disposal also takes an environmental toll. “Food waste is the largest landfill contributor to methane gas production, so unless your municipality has a landfill-to-gas capture, your rotten bananas and forgotten pickles are contributing to global climate change,” Crunchy Chicken writes.
Interested in taking the challenge? All you have to do is try to reduce the amount of edible food you throw out this month. Shop judiciously, cook wisely, and keep track of what’s in the kitchen to make sure you eat it before it goes bad.
Sign up to take the challenge by leaving a comment at Crunchy Chicken.** If you need some bloggy motivation to get you started, go over to Wasted Food,** a blog by Jonathan Bloom devoted to, you guessed it, wasted food. One of his latest post points to resources that show you how to store food safely** to avoid food waste. Good luck de-wasting!
